Hers and Spices

People meet.  Sometimes they fall in love and make a commitment to each other.

Daily life ensues, and they are happy. Until something changes.

Many years ago, a staff member needed a chat.  Her father-in-law had died very recently, and her mother-in-law was understandably distraught.

The night before our chat, her husband had called her to arrange post-work drinks at their local.

He advised that his mother would be moving in with them the following week.  He had put his mother’s house on the market.  It was a fait accompli.

My colleague had no idea what to do.  She loved her husband and her MIL, but knew that life was about to change irrevocably given her MIL’s expectations of a wife’s “place” in the home, her ideas about child-rearing and women working and how to cook.  About how many and which spices were acceptable.

Have you ever experienced  a paradigm-shifting moment such as this?  What did you do? Love to hear your thoughts!
