What is your North Star?
Post-pandemic, a huge number of people worldwide reconsidered their lives and left jobs which no longer matched their needs.
Many have created or attempted to create their own businesses. This is never an easy undertaking, but with cost of living challenges, AI incursions into so many aspects of our work practices and quiet/loud quitting employee behaviours, business owners are challenged at every turn.
Here's where the North Star comes in. If you know what you want, and WHY you want it, the uncertainty of not knowing what the next day will bring becomes less of a stressor.
Napoleon Hill, in his still highly relevant 1937 classic 'Think and Grow Rich', exhorted us to “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.” But he also said that almost inevitably, the goal towards which we are working will not be the one we actually achieve. The goal will morph and change, and that's ok, but your North Star will act like a magnet, drawing you ever closer to fulfilling your dream.
This is a rich topic for discussion, but after inviting you to send in your thoughts, I'd like to leave you with my favourite song by Tim Minchin, 'Not Perfect', performed by one of my favourite Australian ensembles, The Idea of North. Thank you to these wonderful artists!
